France is legit testing nicotine patches as a way to defend against COVID-19.

If you have bad lungs then the COVID won't want you. I imagine there's a difference between smokers and patch users.

Just smoke a cigarette you dorks .
Are you going to stop smoking just because some nerd told you to?

Will the ‘Nicotine Pack Challenge’ be at thing this summer?
Also, toward the end of 2019 there was a big ‘young vapors having lung issues’ problem that was somewhat in the news, but I haven’t seen any real info or studies on Co-Vapid-19 symptoms.

The issue there was bootleg weed vape cartridges where bad actors were diluting real THC oil with vitamin E acetate which looks very similar but when vaped causes mass lung damage through lipid pneumonia.

So start smoking but also stop smoking? Got it.

cigarettes: fun, cool, and healthy?

That was the result of THC and vitamin infused oils being made by unlicensed/unregulated suppliers (in a lot of cases, literally mixing stuff in a bucket in the garage). The US was literally the only country in the world where it happened, and nothing like that has been associated with FDA regulated vapor products, as of yet, anyway.

Didn’t the whole “ Hydrochloroquine and a Z-pack cures Covid-19 ” also come out of France?
I’m taking everything those people say with a grain of salt. Or a heaping spoonful of aquarium cleaner.

Man I knew my strange craving to start smoking during quarantine was legit!

Also the Advil makes it more likely stuff.

However, respiratory illness/diminished lung capacity is a high risk mortality risk f actor COVID, so kinda weird. Maybe smokers are less likely to get the virus , but more likely to die if they do get infected?
Possible medicinal uses of nicotine (for instance, some possibility for Alzheimer’s and dementia) is separate from smoking. Of course, nicotine by itself can raise blood pressure and heart rate if it reaches high concentrations in the body, and that’s a risk factor for covid by itself. Maybe there’s something to it, let them check it out, but don’t go covering yourself in nicotine patches and replacing your Orbit with Nicorette just yet.

What. Smoking and COPD are like part of the top ten comorbilities in Covid-19 deaths here.

They're toasted

I think this is correlation, not causation: smokers are less likely to catch it because no one wants to be near them.

Thats like if meth was an effective treatment. Fuck that I don't need an addiction.

this day just keeps on giving

Well for sure if a smoker gets Covid they will have major lung issues, no way smoking helps pneumonia.

really doesnt...i sure dont want to catch it to find out

The theory is that Covid needs nicotinic acetyl choline receptors to infect cells. So some competitive inhibition going on.

Now what do I do when another nerd tells me to smoke?
![]() 04/23/2020 at 15:57 |

Reading the article, that’s what it sounds like. I don’t speak medical, but the best I can gather is “t here’s some protein receptor that nicotine attaches to, but the virus also likes.” So maybe the nicotine acts like a shield by blocking the receptors the virus normally attaches to.
The interesting thing, though, would be the delivery mechanism. Does using nicotine patches (absorbing through the skin) have the same effect as inhaling it in the form of cigarette smoke?
![]() 04/23/2020 at 15:57 |
|
Thats fascinating, it would be fantastic if it was that simple. We're already set up to produce the crap out of nicotine delivery systems.

If smoking did prevent COVID, Asia wouldn’t have been the epicenter of this pandemic in the first place.

Apparently one of the big studies the wacko right-wingers were all hyped up about was by this guy Didier Raoult in France.

That’s actually sorta kinda what the conclusion of the study was, except at the molecular level. Certain receptors in cells that the virus binds to are also nicotine receptors and apparently the nicotine blocks the virus from binding to the cells.

Problem is nicotine is a very addictive substance, and is a teratogen. It also causes problems with brain formation in adolescents.
![]() 04/23/2020 at 17:44 |
|
But adolescents in general are not a high risk group for the virus anyway, if they do find out it works the way they think it might, could be a solution for adults
